Skin contact: Wash immediately, abundantly and thoroughly with water. Consult a doctor quickly. In case of extensive burns, hospitalize.

Eye contact: Wash open eyes immediately, abundantly and thoroughly for at least 15 minutes. Consult an ophthalmologist immediately.

Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting, rinse mouth and lips with plenty of water if the subject is conscious, then hospitalize.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media:   Foam, Dry powder, Carbon dioxide (CO2)

Unsuitable extinguishing media: Water

Specific hazards: Flammable liquid,

Thermal decomposition giving flammable and toxic products, Methylmercaptan, Carbon oxides, Sulphur oxides

Specific methods: Cool containers / tanks with water spray. Prohibit all sources of sparks and ignition - Do not smoke.

Special protective actions for fire-fighters: Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and protective suit.

Fire fighting equipment should be thoroughly decontaminated after use.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures:

Evacuate non-essential staff and those not equipped with individual protection apparatus. Prohibit all sources of sparks and ignition - Do not smoke. Prohibit contact with skin and eyes and inhalation of vapours. Use personal protective equipment. In case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable respiratory equipment.

Environmental precautions:

Do not release into the environment. Do not let product enter drains. Dam up with sand or inert earth (do not use combustible materials).

Methods and materials for containment and cleaning up:

Recovery: Pump into a labelled inert emergency tank. Flush area with water

Neutralisation: Neutralize carefully with a dilute caustic soda solution.

Elimination: Destroy the product by incineration (in accordance with local and national regulations).

Handling and storage

Technical measures/Precautions:

Storage and handling precautions applicable to products: Liquid. Flammable. CORROSIVE. Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at machinery. Provide showers, eye-baths. Provide water supplies near the point of use. Provide self-contained breathing apparatus nearby. Well ventilate empty vats and tanks before entering.

Safe handling advice:

Keep well away from naked flames. Prohibit all sources of sparks and ignition - Do not smoke. Use product only in closed system. Open drum carefully as content may be under pressure.

Hygiene measures:

Prohibit contact with skin and eyes and inhalation of vapours. Remove and wash contaminated clothing before re-use.

When using do not eat, drink or smoke.

Wash hands after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and protective equipment before entering eating areas.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities:

Keep tightly closed in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place. Store away from heat and ignition sources. Provide a catch-tank in a bunded area.

Provide an anti-corrosion protected electrical equipment in a bunded area. Provide electrical earthing of equipment and electrical equipment

usable in explosive atmospheres.

Do not store above: 40 °C

Incompatible products:

Acids, Strong oxidizing agents

Packaging material:

Recommended: Stainless steel, Joints : butyl rubber, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)

To be avoided: Copper and copper alloys

Specific use(s) (End Use): part of the substance/product is used as intermediate under strictly controlled conditions as defined in Article 18(4) of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (REACH Regulation) and must therefore be handled as such.

Exposure controls / personal protection

CONTROL PARAMETERS:

Products of decomposition:

Methanethiol

Source               Date               Value type      Value  (ppm)

INRS                   01 2008            VME               0.5

ACGIH (US)      2007                  TWA               0,5

EXPOSURE CONTROLS:

Site documentation to support safe handling arrangements including the selection of engineering, administrative and personal protective equipment controls in accordance with risk-based management systems must be available at each Manufacturing/using site

General protective measures: Use high inegrity methods of material loading and unloading. Investigate engineering techniques to reduce exposures.

Ensure sufficient air exchange and/or exhaust in work areas. Routine monitoring and inspection for leaks to reduce fugitive emissions.

Personal protective equipment:

Respiratory protection:

Where airborne exposure is likely wear suitable respiratory equipment. If potential for significant exposure : Self contained Breathing Apparatus

Hand protection:      Neoprene gloves

Eye/face protection:      Safety glasses, Face-shield

Skin and body protection:      Combination with delayed penetration

Environmental exposure controls : Do not release into the environment. In case of waste wate, use etchniques to minimize the emissions : incineration or any treatment to minimize the level of release (ex WWTP).

Stability and reactivity

Reactivity & Stability: This material is chemically stable under normal and anticipated storage and handling conditions.

Keep pH alkaline (slight excess of : Sodium hydroxide 1 - 2%) , pH>=14

Conditions to avoid: Keep away from heat and sources of ignition. To avoid thermal decomposition, do not overheat.

Materials to avoid: Acids ( Formation of  Methylmercaptan)

Strong oxidizing agents such as Hydrogen peroxide, Nitric acid, Hypochlorites (Release of  sulphur dioxide)

Thermal decomposition:

Decomposition temperature:  210 °C

Hazardous decomposition products:

Possible decomposition products in case of hydrolysis are:  Methylmercaptan

Thermal decomposition giving flammable and toxic products : Methylmercaptan, Sulphur oxides, Carbon oxides

Disposal considerations

Disposal of product:       Destroy the product by incineration (in accordance with local and national regulations).
