- Executive summary:
RFR 6634 is hygroscopic. The test substance was taken from the sample container in a nitrogen atmosphere. The test was performed as stipulated in UN-MTC N.5 'Test method for substances which in contact with water emit flammable gases'.
The substance was tested according to the step by step sequence described below.
Stage 1
The test substance was added to a dish containing distilled water.
Result: No formation of reaction gases was observed. Attempts to ignite the gas phase above the dish with the flame of a burner produced negative results.
Stage 2
The test substance was introduced to a filter paper floating on the surface of the distilled water contained in a dish.
Result: No formation of reaction gases was observed. Attempts to ignite the gas phase above the filter paper produced negative results.
Stage 3
A few drops of water were added to a sample of the test substance.
Result: No formation of reaction gases was observed. Ignition attempts of the gas phase produced negative results.
Stage 4
Water was added from a dropping funnel to the quantities of test substance specified below. Four test runs were performed.
Result: The following total quantities of liberated gas were determined by using a miniature gasometer.
Test Run 1 Test Run 2 Test Run 3 Test Run 4 Test Sample Weights 10.0 g 10.0 g 10.0 g 25.0 g Amount of Water 20 mL 20 mL 20 mL 50 mL Time Total Gas Evolution Rate [L/(kg x h)] 60 min 0.2 0.1 0.2 0.28 120 min 0 0 0 0 180 min 0 0 0 0 240 min 0 0 0 0 300 min 0 0 0 0 360 min 0 0 0 0 420 min 0 0 0 0 This substance is not able to release flammable gases in contact with water and does not liberate gases in hazardous amounts.
RFR 6634 does not ignite spontaneously with water and does not liberate gases in hazardous amounts when tested according to UN-MTC Procedure N.5.

- Conclusions:
- RFR 6634 is classified as a not readily combustible solid when tested according to UN-MTC Procedure N.1.
- Executive summary:
RFR 6634 is hygroscopic. The test substance was taken from the sample container in a nitrogen atmosphere.
The test was performed as stipulated in UN test procedure ‘Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods - Manual of Tests and Criteria’ (UN-MTC), Part III, sub-section 33.2.1.4.1, Test N.1 ‘Test method for readily combustible solids’.
The substance was formed into a powder train about 250 mm long by 20 mm wide by 10 mm high on a non-combustible, non-porous and low heat-conducting base plate. 30 – 40 mm beyond the 100 mm timing zone, 1 mL of a wetting solution was added to the pile. A hot flame from a gas burner was applied to one end of the powder train until the powder ignites or for a maximum of 2 minutes. A preliminary screening test was performed to determine if propagation by burning with flame or smoldering occurs without wetted zone. If propagation over 200 mm of the train occurs within a specified time then a full test programme to determine the burning rate was carried out.
The substance in its delivery state was measured. A burner flame was used as ignition source. The test substance melted when approached by the ignition flame. The substance did not burn up. No further testing was required.
RFR 6634 is classified as a not readily combustible solid when tested according to UN-MTC Procedure N.1.
