Fourth meeting of the ECHA-Stakeholder Exchange Network on Exposure Scenarios (ENES 4)

The Event

16-17 May 2013 | Helsinki

The European Chemicals Agency together with the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic), Eurometaux, CONCAWE (the oil companies' European association), the European Association of Chemical Distributors (Fecc) and the International Association for Soaps, Detergents and Maintenance Products (AISE) on behalf of the Downstream Users of Chemicals Coordination Group (DUCC) are coordinating the ENES meetings.

ENES4 provided the latest news on current issues, including:

1. Presentation of the draft Roadmap developed by a cross-stakeholder working group in cooperation with ECHA. The Roadmap includes concrete actions on what improvements can be made on exposure scenarios, how this could be done and what the short terms and medium term priorities are.
    
2. Outcome of an exemplification exercise by industry on the harmonisation of short titles for exposure scenarios and the table of content for the extended safety data sheet annex.
3. Progress on:
   • the standard for electronic communication of exposure scenario  information, the ESCom package (including XML format and catalogue of standard phrases).
   • converting substance-related information in exposure scenarios into information for the safe use of a mixture.
4. Specific Consumer Exposure Determinants (SCED).  SCEDs help companies to refine the inputs for exposure scenario building and exposure estimates for consumer uses.

ENES is a cross-sector collaborative network to share knowledge, good practices and approaches to developing, communicating and implementing (REACH) exposure scenarios. 

Its purpose is to enhance the safe use of chemicals through the supply chain by:

• sharing experience of the lessons learnt in the building and use of exposure scenarios;
• sharing experience on practical solutions to overcome any obstacles in their development and implementation;
• improving the understanding on what features make an effective exposure scenario; and
• enabling chemical product suppliers to move towards adopting suitable approaches that deliver consistent and useful exposure scenarios to downstream users in an efficient way.
