Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

- Endpoint:
- water solubility
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Reliability:
- 2 (reliable with restrictions)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- study well documented, meets generally accepted scientific principles, acceptable for assessment
- Justification for type of information:
- In-house laboraotry work including impact of pH
- Qualifier:
- equivalent or similar to guideline
- Guideline:
- OECD Guideline 105 (Water Solubility)
- Principles of method if other than guideline:
- Solubility was measured at the pH of thematerial and then measured over a range to represent environmental conditions.
- GLP compliance:
- no
- Type of method:
- other: Observations
- Specific details on test material used for the study:
- Batch number of test material: B-03-3167
Technical grade material is in hydrated form - Key result
- Water solubility:
- ca. 700 g/L
- Conc. based on:
- test mat.
- Incubation duration:
- ca. 72 h
- Temp.:
- 20 °C
- pH:
- ca. 1.5
- Key result
- Water solubility:
- ca. 0.1 g/L
- Conc. based on:
- test mat.
- Temp.:
- 20 °C
- pH:
- ca. 5
- Key result
- Water solubility:
- < 0.1 g/L
- Conc. based on:
- test mat.
- Temp.:
- 20 °C
- pH:
- ca. 7
- Conclusions:
- The solubility is very pH dependant with precipitation at neutral or alkaline pH resulting in very low water solubility expected under environmental conditions.
The substance supplied is acidic.
A subsequent check was made for solubility at 100 mg/l and was found to be sparingly soluble at pH 7
It is known that under environmental condtions where ion exchange with sedments is possible, chromium salts quickly precipitate out as Cr(OH3).

Conclusions:
This demonstrates that the solubility in water is high but it becomes insoluble at pH 5.
Description of key information
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Water solubility:
- 700 g/L
- at the temperature of:
- 20 °C
Additional information
The pH is 1.5
The substance is soluble until pH 4, then it becomes sparingly soluble and at a pH >7 is insoluble.
