The average 10th, 50th and 90th percentile particle sizes for platinum were 55, 286 and 811 μm, respectively. The specific surface area was determined as 0.08 ± 0.01 m2/g. The average 10th, 50th and 90th percentile particle sizes for platinum black (Platin-Mohr) were 0.064, 0.41 and 1.37 μm, respectively. The specific surface area was determined as 31.0 ± 0.4 m2/g.
Additional information
Potthoff (2012) is a non-GLP study but follows standard methods for determining particle size distribution and specific surface area. Both platinum powder and platinum black were tested in the study. This is considered to be suitable for use a key study for this endpoint.
The average 10th, 50th and 90th percentile particle sizes for platinum were 55, 286 and 811 μm, respectively. The specific surface area was determined as 0.08 ± 0.01 m2/g. The average 10th, 50th and 90th percentile particle sizes for platinum black (Platin-Mohr) were 0.064, 0.41 and 1.37 μm, respectively. The specific surface area was determined as 31.0 ± 0.4 m2/g.
The dustiness of Platinum sponge and Platinum black was tested in a modified Heubach procedure according to the guideline DIN 55992-1:2006 (Selck and Parr 2012). The studies are non-GLP, but follow a standard guideline and are considered to be reliable. The total dustiness of Platinum sponge was determined to be 72.65 mg/g. The inhalable fraction was 41.92 mg/g, the thoracic fraction was 3.38 mg/g and the respirable fraction was 0.49 mg/g. The Mass Median Aerodynamic Diameter (MMAD) was determined to be 31.39 μm with a geometric standard deviation of 1.85 μm. The total dustiness of Platinum black was determined to be 205.45 mg/g. The inhalable fraction was 157.25 mg/g, the thoracic fraction was 126.22 mg/g and the respirable fraction was 60.55 mg/g. The Mass Median Aerodynamic Diameter (MMAD) was determined to be 7.4 μm with a geometric standard deviation of 3.2 μm.
