Description of key information
Proprietary studies of skin irritation and eye irritation are available for the material 'Chromsal B' (chromium hydroxide sulphate / sodium sulphate). The studies are not reported in detail but clearly show that the substance is not a skin or eye irritant.

Additional information
No data on skin and eye irritation/corrosion on chromium trinitrate itself are available. However, it is well investigated that soluble inorganic nitrates such as ammonium or potassium nitrate are non-irritant to skin and eyes. Therefore, a chromium(III) compound, chromium hydroxy sulphate, is used as surrogate to assess the skin and eye irritation/corrosion potential of chromium trinitrate. Chromium hydroxy sulphate is a chromium(III) compound being very soluble in water as chromium trinitrate and thus is the best surrogate for chromium trinitrate. The following findings were achieved using chromium hydroxy sulphate:
Skin irritation/corrosion
A proprietary study of skin irritation was performed to a non-standard protocol. However the exposure method used in this study (24 -hour application to the interior surface of the rabbit ear) is noted to be more stringent than specified under the current OECD guideline 404. The finding in this study that the test material is non-irritating to skin is therefore acceptable.
Eye damage/irritation
A proprietary study of eye irritation was performed to a protocol broadly comparable to the current OECD guideline 405. The test material was found to be non-irritating under the conditions of this study.
Although both studies are not reported in great detail and are not performed in strict compliance with current guidelines, they indicate that the substance is not irritating to the skin or eyes. This conclusion is supported by the absence of findings of irritation in humans following occupational exposure. Further testing for skin and eye irritation is therefore not justified on scientific or animal welfare grounds.
Justification for classification or non-classification
The results of the studies performed with 'Chromsal B' are relevant and applicable to the substance chromium trinitrate. Based on the results of these studies and the absence of findings in occupationally exposed workers, no classification for skin or eye irritation according to CLP (Regulation EC No 1272/2008) or DSD (Directive 67/548/EEC) is proposed.
