Description of key information

1,5,2,4-dioxadithiane 2,2,4,4-tetraoxide (MMDS) is rapidly hydrolized into methandisulphonic acid (MDSA) in the water. Within 104 minutes, all MMDS hydrolized into MDSA. As a result of this, it is very difficult to prepare the test solution of MMDS. Therefore, according to the OECD guidance document, No.23, September 2000, "Guidance Doccument of Aquatic Toxicity testing of Difficult Substances and Mixtures", the toxicity study of fish with MDSA was conducted. This study was performed according to the OECD 203 Guideline.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Fresh water fish

Fresh water fish
Effect concentration:
67 mg/L

Additional information

The test revealed a 96 hour LC50 in the pH unadjusted condition (pH indicated 3.3 to 7.7) of 67 mg/L. However, the LC50 with pH adjustment (which indicated 7.2 to 7.7) was >100 mg/L. Therefore, it was considered that the effect to the test organisms was caused by lower pH. The test substance concentrations in the test solution were maintained within ±7% of the nominal concentrations during the exposure period.
