Materials and methods

Test guideline
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: VDI sheet 1
Principles of method if other than guideline:
A 8 ml cylindrical fine-mesh wire basket is filled with the test substance. The same is done with graphite as reference. Both samples are heated electrically in an air stream and the temperature inside the two samples is recorded. At the onset temperature the temperature of the test substance exceeds that of the reference measurement. Classification as self-heating is required when the onset temperature is below 220°C

If the sample melts before or during the oxidation reaction, an additional measurement is performed with a 1 : 1 mixture of the substance with kieselgur. With this test the self ignition behavior of the substance in contact with materials having a large specific surface (e.g. isolations) is simulated. The result of this simulation is not relevant for classification.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
Based on the test results, the substance
has not to be classified as "self-heating substance" according to UN transport classification (Class 4.2) and EU-GHS/CLP (EG 1272/2008)
Executive summary:

The substance was tested for autoflammability with the Grewer screening test according to VDI 2263 sheet 1 in a 8 ml wire basket.

With the pure substance an endothermic effect was observed between 170 and 210°C. Up to the maximum test temperature of 440 °C no exothermic effects were detected. After the test the wire basket was empty.

With a 1 : 1 mixture of the substance with kieselgur also an endothermic effect was observed betweeb 170 and 210 °C. Starting with 210 °C selfignitin occured resulting in a tempereture increase up to 650°C.
