F 46 Black is a reaction product of Acid Yellow 42, Acid Black 2 and Basic Violet 1. It is a black powder with a characteristic odour (Dokumental GmbH & Co KG, 2007)

Melting point / melting range

The determination of the melting point / melting range of F 46 Black was performed according to EU guideline A.1 , OECD 102 and EPA OPPTS 830.7200 by applying the capillary method. F 46 Black decomposed at a rounded mean temperature of 213 °C, i.e. 486 K. No liquid phase was observed up to 400 °C (Kiss, 2008).

Boiling point

The determination of the boiling point of F 46 Black was performed according to EU guideline A.2, OECD 103 and EPA OPPTS 830.7220. No experimental results were reported, because in the study on melting point / melting range (LAB Research Ltd Study Code: 08/614-344AN) F 46 Black decomposed at a rounded mean temperature of 213 °C, i.e. 486 K. No liquid phase was observed up to 400 °C (Kiss, 2008).

Density

The relative density at 20° C was determined according to EU guideline A.3, OECD 109 and EPA OPPTS 830.7300. The relative density of F 46 Black, determined by means of an air comparison pycnometer (for solids) at 20 °C is D4 (20 °C) = 1.142 +/- 0.0079. The average density was calculated to be 1.142 g/cm³ (Kiss, 2008).

Particle size distribution (Granulometry)

The particle size distribution was not determined as according to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex VII, Section 7.14 the study only needs to be conducted if the substance is marketed or used in a solid or granular form. Based on information provided by the sponsor, F 46 Black is marketed and/or used in form of a liquid preparation (Baehr and Loquay, 2008).

Vapour pressure

The vapour pressure was not determined as according to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex VII, Section 7.5 the study does not need to be conducted if the melting point is above 300 °C. In the study on melting point / melting range (LAB Research Ltd Study Code: 08/614-344AN) no liquid phase was observed up to 400 °C (Baehr and Loquay, 2008). 

Instead, F 46 Black decomposed at a temperature of 213 °C, i.e. 486 K Thus, no study on vapour pressure measurement was conducted (Baehr and Loquay, 2008).

Partition coefficient

The log Pow (Pow = Partition coefficient octanol/water) was determined according to EU guideline A.8, OECD 117 and EPA OPPTS 830.7550 by applying the HPLC method. F 46 Black is a reaction product of Acid Yellow 42, Acid Black 2 and Basic Violet 1. LogPow values ranged from 2.86 to 3.84 with individual peaks at:

Peak 1: log Pow = 2.86 +/- 0.09 (10.1 area %)

Peak 2: log Pow = 3.34 +/- 0.09 (42.4 area %)

Peak 3: log Pow = 3.84 +/- 0.09 (47.5 area %) (Kiss, 2008)

Water solubility

The water solubility was determined according to EU guideline A.6, OECD 105 and EPA OPPTS 830.7840 by applying the column elution method. In conclusion, the water solubility of F 46 Black was determined to be < 1 mg/L (Kiss, 2008).

Surface tension

According to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex VII, Section 7.6 the test on surface tension determination is not required, if the water solubility of F 46 Black is below 1 mg/L at 20 °C (see: study on water solubility, LAB Research Ltd Study Code: 08/614-345AN)

Additionally, in the study on melting point / melting range (LAB Research Ltd Study Code: 08/614 -344AN) no liquid phase was observed up to 400 °C. Instead, F 46 Black decomposed at a temperature of 213 °C, i.e. 486 K. Thus, no study on surface tension measurement was conducted (Baehr and Loquay, 2008).

Auto flammability

The auto flammability was determined according to EU guideline A.16. No self-ignition temperature was observed up to the temperature of decomposition (determined to start at about 213 °C, i.e. 486 K (see: study on melting point / melting range (LAB Research Ltd Study Code: 08/614-344AN; Kiss, 2008).

Flammability

The flammability was determined according to EU guideline A.10 and EPA OPPTS 830.6315. As F 46 Black was shown to be not highly flammable (see: LAB Research Ltd Study Code: 08/614-356AN). Based on information on handling and use studies on the flammability on contact with water (according to EU guideline A.12) and pyrophoric properties (according to EU guideline A.13) were waived. F 46 Black was not considered highly flammable in contact with water and the substance has no pyrophoric properties.

Explosiveness

The test method for the determination of the explosive properties of a substance as described for solid materials in EU guideline A.14 was replaced by a theoretical based evaluation. F 46 Black is a complex substance of unknown and variable composition of biological origin (UVCB-substance, sub-type 1). The chemical structure of F 46 Black is not known. Nevertheless, F 46 Black is not explosive, based on experience in handling and use. No test for explosive properties was carried out (Baehr and Loquay, 2008).

Oxidising properties

The test method for the determination of the oxidising properties of a substance as described for solid materials in EU guideline A.17 was replaced by a theory based evaluation. F 46 Black is a complex substance of unknown and varialble composition of biological origin (UVCB-substance, sub-type 1). The chemical structure of F 46 Black is not known. Nevertheless, oxidising properties are not a concern, based on experience in handling and use. F 46 Black is not oxidising. No test for oxidising properties was carried out (Baehr and Loquay, 2008).
