Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Reference
Name:
Salicylaldehyde
Type of composition:
legal entity composition of the substance
State / form:
liquid
Reference substance:
Salicylaldehyde
PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

The registered substance is not readily biodegradable but a total primary degradation is demonstrated as the substance is totally converted to a transformation product (salicylic acid, CAS n°69-72-7). This transformation product is readily biodegradable according to OECD TG 301C with 88.1% of biodegradation (CERI, 1975), therefore the registered substance and transformation product can not be considered as Persistent (P) or very Persistent (vP) in the environment.

In addition, with log Kow values lower than 4.5 for both substances, the registered substance and transformation product do not meet the criterion for bioaccumulation (B).

For the toxicity criterion (T), no data are available in chronic conditions. However, in acute conditions, the most sensitive species for the registered substance is fish with an LC50 value well greater than 0.1 mg/L (at 2.3 mg/L). In addition, the registered substance is not classified as carcinogenic, germ cell mutagenic or toxic for reproduction, and there is no other evidence of chronic toxicity according to Regulation EC No 1272/2008. Therefore, the registered substance is definitively not T. Transformation product is classified reprotoxic 2 (H361d, suspected of damaging the unborn child), then it is considered as toxic.

In conclusion, the registered substance does not meet the PBT nor vPvB criteria. As transformation product is not persistent neither bioaccumulative, it can not be considered as PBT, nor vPvB.
