Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Materials and methods

Principles of method if other than guideline:
The sample is slowly cooled to about 3 - 5 °C below the expected freezing point by stirring a thermometer in a cooling bath. Crystallisation is then triggered either by rubbing with the thermometer at the test-tube wall or by inoculation. The seed crystals are evenly distributed in the sample by stirring intensely for a short period. After initialisation of crystallisation, the thermometer is only slowly moved up and down without touching the test-tube wall until the highest temperature is reached. The highest temperature is recorded, accurate to 0.1 °C, and is given as the freezing point. Temperature correction, if given in calibration certificates, is accounted for.
