The acute toxicity of the test material to fish was investigated in a key study (Caspers, 1992) using Brachydanio rerio (zebra fish) in accordance with GLP and the standardised guidelines EU Method C.1 and OECD 203. The freshwater fish were exposed to the test material at a range of concentrations 7.8 to 44 mg/L, and a blank control run in parallel. Based on the weighed test material, a 40-99% decrease in concentration was observed after 24 hours, measured as the sum of test material and the phenoxyethanol hydrolysis products in the 11 and 31 mg/L exposure groups. Recovery of the test material was less than 80% due to test material hydrolysis to phenoxyethanol, therefore the results are based on nominal test concentrations. Under the conditions of the test, mortality and clinical signs of toxicity were first observed at a test concentration of 16 mg/L. The LC0 and LC100 values were determined to be 11 mg/L and 16 mg/L respectively. The LC50 was calculated to be 13.3 mg/L, based on the geometric mean of the LC0 and LC100.

The study was performed in line with GLP and accepted guidelines, however the reporting was incomplete. A sufficient level of detail was available to assess the quality of the presented results and accordingly the study was assigned a reliability score of 2 in line with the principles for assessing data quality set out in Klimisch (1997).
