Description of key information

non-target-micro-organisms
According to Commission Directive 96/12/EC the effects on non-target micro-organisms of the active substance must be investigated. No studies are supplied for this point. Methyl bromide is intended for use as a space and pre-planting soil fumigant. It is proposed that the potential impact on soil microbial activity need not be investigated for space fumigation, as preparations containing methyl bromide are proposed for application to stored products and not proposed for application in the environment. When soil incorporated, it will be expected that it will have a negative effect on the populations of non-target micro-organisms in the soil. The use of methyl bromide in some situations must be balanced against the negative aspects of its use. Although methyl bromide is expected to cause a negative effect on the populations of soil non-target micro-organisms this is balanced against the improvement in crop quality. Repeated exposure is also not expected, as methyl bromide will only be applied once per year. This should enable the populations of soil non-target micro-organisms to sufficiently recover.
