Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

The ready biodegradability of Vivaldie was assessed in the Manometric Respirometry Test (OECD Procedure 301F). Vivaldie was added to two flasks containing mineral salts medium inoculated with activated sludge (30 mg solids/l) to give a nominal test concentration of 100 mg/l. Sodium benzoate had been degraded by 63.5% of the ThOD of the mixture (91.9 mg 02) after 4 days and 86.2% after 28 days. In the presence of Vivaldie, degradation of sodium benzoate had achieved 67.9% on Day 4 and 77.5% by the end of the test on Day 28. Cumulative oxygen consumption in the controls after 28 days (17.6 mg02) was considered to be acceptable for this assay system. These results confirm that the inoculum was viable and that the test was valid. There was no evidence of oxygen consumption in biotic mixtures containing Vivaldie after 28 days of incubation and abiotic degradation of Vivaldie was negligible.Substances are considered to be readily biodegradable in this test if oxygen consumption is equal to or greater than 60% of the theoretical value within ten days of the level achieving 10%. Vivaldie cannot, therefore, be considered to be readily biodegradable.
