Additional information

Stability - Hydrolysis

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VIII, the study does not need to be conducted if the substance is readily biodegradable. This is the case for the submission substance. In general, abiotic degradation by hydrolysis of the submission substance is expected to be low as indicated by the dissociation constant (IUCLID section 4.21).

Ready biodegradation

In a reliable key study, the test item 2,3 -butanediol((2R,3R)-rich) was determined to be ready biodegradability over a period of 28 days. Percentage microbial degradation of the test item was 84.7% at the end of the 10-d window (after 11.6 days) and was 91.0% at end of the test (28 days). Therefore, the submission substance is expected to fast disappear in case of release and environmental exposure will be vegetable.

Transport and distribution - Adsorption / desorption

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annexes VIII and IX, the study does not need to be conducted if based on the physicochemical properties the substance can be expected to have a low potential for adsorption (e.g. the substance has a low octanol water partition coefficient), or the substance and its relevant degradation products decompose rapidly. This is the case for the submission substance.

The estimated Koc is calculated at 1 L/kg or 0.5058 L/kg by the MCI or Kow method, respectively (EPISuite KOCWIN v2.01, exp. log Kow: -0.72). Based on the low log Kow and estimated Koc value, the submission substance is not expected to adsorb to soil and sediment.
