Fatty acids, C8-10-(even numbered), esters with pentaerythritol and adipic acid (EC 948-383-1) is characterised bylow water solubility (< 165 µg/L at 20 °C, pH 6.3; OECD Guideline 105, column elution method), low volatilization potential (vapour pressure <0.00001 Pa at 20 °C; QSAR, ARChem SPARC. version 4.6) and a high log Koc (5.77 – 19.76; MCI method, KOCWIN v2.00). Furthermore, the substance is considered readily biodegradable.

The substance is not volatile (vapour pressure <0.00001 Pa at 20 °C; QSAR, ARChem SPARC. version 4.6) and thus evaporation to the air and subsequent transport through the atmosphere to other environmental compartments is not likely.

According to the Guidance on Information Requirements and Chemical Safety Assessment, Chapter R.7b (ECHA, 2017), the ready biodegradability of a substance can be considered indicative of rapid and ultimate degradation in most environments, including biological sewage treatment plants (STP) where the substance will be extensively removed in the primary settling tank and fat trap. As a result of the high adsorption potential of the substance (5.77 – 19.76; MCI method, KOCWIN v2.00) a removal from the water column to a significant degree by adsorption to sewage sludge can be expected (Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.7b, (ECHA, 2017)). Thus, only limited amounts will get in contact with activated sludge organisms in STPs and the concentration of the substance in effluents of conventional STPs is presumably marginal.

Based on the physico-chemical propteries of the substance, soil and sediment are expected to be the main compartment for environmental distribution, if the substance is released to the environment.

Due to ready biodegradability, abiotic degradation via hydrolysis is considered not relevant for the substance. The bioavailability of Fatty acids, C8-10-(even numbered), esters with pentaerythritol and adipic acid (EC 948-383-1) is expected to be low based on the predicted environmental fate and QSAR calculation. Due to the low water solubility and the ready biodegradability a relevant uptake and bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms is not expected.
