Description of key information

Reliable, (acute) aquatic toxicity OECD guideline studies of cesium fluoroaluminate are available for three trophic levels: algae, invertebrates and fish indicating a low potential for toxicity. Whereas the reported LC50 for fish is above the OECD limit of 100 mg/L, invertebrates and algae appear to be more sensitive. The following effect concentrations are applied in the chemical safety assessment of cesium fluoroaluminate:

- A 96-h LC50 > 120 mg/L cesium tetrafluoroaluminate (measured, TWA) for Gobiocypris rarus based on a semi-static limit test (OECD 203)

- A 48-h EC50 (mobility) of 50 mg/L cesium tetrafluoroaluminate (geometric mean) for D. magna based on a semi-static test (OECD 202)

- 72-h ErC10 and ErC50 values for growth rate inhibition of R. subcapitata of 8.53 and 14.21 mg cesium tetrafluoroaluminate /L, respectively based on a static test (OECD 201)

 

Regarding to toxicity to aquatic microrganisms, 3-h EC10 and EC50 values were determined with 250 and 954 mg cesium fluoroaluminate/L (nominal, analytically verified), respectively, based on an activated sewage sludge respiration inhibition test (OECD 209).

 

In sum, cesium tetrafluoroaluminate appears to have a relatively low potential for (acute) aquatic toxicity.
