The test substance 3,3-bis(4-hydroxy-5-isopropyl-o-tolyl)phthalide is considered as showing no self-ignition up to 281.5°C under the test conditions.
The study was performed according to EU Method A.16 without deviations and therefore considered to be of the highest quality (reliability Klimisch 1).
Executive summary:

The relative self ignition temperature of the test item was determined in a study according to EU Method A.16.

A temperature-programmed laboratory oven (volume about 2 litres) with isolated heating wires, fitted with natural air circulation and explosion relief (ZPA3, Petrotest) was used. The oven contained a 200 mL Erlenmeyer flask in which a wire mesh cube was mounted at the thermoelement to measure the sample temperature. This assembly ensures that the thermoelement was immersed in the test substance. The distance to the orifice of the flask was 10 cm.

No sample preparation was necessary. The cube was filled with the test substance and was tapped gently, adding more of the test substance until the cube was completely full. The cube was then mounted in the oven at 21.2 °C as described above with a thermo element placed at the centre of the cube. The temperature of the oven was measured with the PT100 thermometer of the ZPA3. Running the program “FEST” (program for solids), the temperatures of the oven and the sample were printed every 5 minutes while the temperature of the oven was increased to 280 °C with a nominal heating rate of 0.58 K/min. An ignition of the test substance would have been detected automatically by the ZPA3, when the thermocouple inside the sample cube would have shown a very sharp temperature rise above the oven temperature.

No increase in the temperature of the test substance in comparison to that of the oven could be detected; also no signs of ignition could be observed.
