Description of key information

Reliable toxicity studies with freshwater fish, aquatic invertebrates and algae have been conducted for the test substance, ε-Caprolactone, oligomeric reaction products with 2,2’-oxydiethanol.

The key studies are summarised below:

A reliable (Klimisch 2) acute toxicity study with freshwater fish, Danio rerio (previously known as Brachydanio rerio) and using the test substance, ε-Caprolactone, oligomeric reaction products with 2,2’-oxydiethanol, is available with a 96-hour LC50 (mortality) of 190 mg/l, based on measured test concentrations. This value is taken as the short-term toxicity to fish endpoint for ε-Caprolactone, oligomeric reaction products with 2,2’-oxydiethanol.

A reliable (Klimisch 1) acute toxicity study with the aquatic invertebrate Daphnia magna and using the test substance, ε-Caprolactone, oligomeric reaction products with 2,2’-oxydiethanol is available with 48-hour EC50s of >105.8 mg/l and >94.6 mg/l based on geometric mean measured concentrations of two components of ε-Caprolactone, oligomeric reaction products with 2,2’-oxydiethanol. These values are taken as the short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates endpoint for ε-Caprolactone, oligomeric reaction products with 2,2’-oxydiethanol.

A reliable (Klimisch 1) study with the freshwater alga, Desmodesmus subspicatus, and using the test substance ε-Caprolactone, oligomeric reaction products with 2,2’-oxydiethanol is available with 72-hour ErC50 (growth rate inhibition) of 33.14 mg/l and 6.29 mg/l based on geometric mean measured concentrations of two components of the test substance. These values are taken as the toxicity in aquatic algae endpoint for ε-Caprolactone, oligomeric reaction products with 2,2’-oxydiethanol.
