Test organisms

Test organisms (species):
Pimephales promelas
Details on test organisms:
Fathead minnow embryos that were < 24 hr old were obtained from the University of Wisconsin-Superior culture unit, and all embryo masses were pooled. Approximately 42-47 embryos were randomly selected and transferred to the exposure chamber (84-94 fry/chamber). At hatch, 15 fry from each egg cup and its replicate were randomly selected and transferred to each exposure chamber.

Percent Normal Larvae at Hatch and Percent Survival data were transformed using the Freeman-Tukey Arc sine method prior to analysis by William's TeSt. The
Wet Weight and Length data were analyzed using William's Test (P<0.05), while the Dry Weight data were analyzed using Dunnett's Test.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Validity criteria fulfilled:
not specified
Conclusions:
In the test with 3-(Trifluoromethyl)benzaldehyde (CAS no. 454-89-7) with fish (Pimephales promelas) a NOEC of 117 µg/L and a LOEC of 285 µg/L after 33 dyas are obtained concerning the percent survival, wet weight, dry weight and length standard of the juvenile growth. The test guideline is equivalent to EPA OPPTS 850.1400 (Fish Early-life Stage Toxicity Test).
