Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Annex VII of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, sections 8.1 and 8.2 state that studies for skin irritation/corrosion and eye irritation do not need to be conducted if ‘the available information indicates that the criteria are met for classification as corrosive to the skin or irritating to eyes’.
L-2-Chloropropionic acid is classified under the CLP Regulation EC 1272/2008 Annex VI as Skin Corr. 1A (H314: causes severe skin burns and eye damage).
Available data confirm the corrosivity of the substance.

Additional information

There are no skin irritation/corrosion or eye irritation studies available on L-2-Chloropropionic acid.

A study to measure the pH on a 1% vol aqueous solution of L-2-chlorpropionic acid gave a pH of 1.83, showing that the test substance is highly acidic and likely to be corrosive.

Data has been reported on 2-chloropropionic acid, the racemic form of the substance, by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, which states that based on human data the substance is considered ‘corrosive to the eye and skin’.

Justification for classification or non-classification

L-2-Chloropropionic acid is classified under the CLP Regulation EC 1272/2008 Annex VI as Skin Corr. 1A (H314: causes severe skin burns and eye damage).

It is concluded that no study is required and that existing available information is sufficient to corroborate the Skin Corr. 1A classification listed on EC 1272/2008 Annex VI.
