Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

In an OECD 301B valid study (Hydrotox GmbH, 2011a), the degradation extent of the test material (alpha-methyl cinnamaldehyde (Cyprinal)) was 97.0% within 28 days after acidification.

In a supporting Closed Bottle Biodegradability Test conducted according to Council Directive 92/69 EEC, Method C.4-E (Bayer, 1999a), within the test period of 28 days, a degradation rate of 63% was determined for Methyl cinnamic aldehyde alpha. Methyl cinnamic aldehyde alpha is therefore classified as "Readily Biodegradable".

Additional information

In a key OECD 301B valid study (Hydrotox GmbH, 2011a), the degradation extent of the test material (alpha-methyl cinnamaldehyde; CAS# 101 -39 -3) was 97.0% within 28 days after acidification (mean of three replicates).

On day 4 the mean degradation extent of the test material was 2.6% and reached 77.4% by day 11. Therefore the test material (alpha-methyl cinnamaldehyde) reached the pass level for ready biodegradability (60% ThCO2 and 10 -day window).

In a supporting Closed Bottle Biodegradability Test conducted according to Council Directive 92/69 EEC, Method C.4-E (Bayer, 1999a), the test material (Methyl cinnamic aldehyde alpha; CAS# 101-39-3) was suspended in a mineral medium, inoculated with a mixed population of aquatic microorganisms and incubated for 28 days under aerobic conditions in the dark at 20 ± 1°C. During this period, the biodegradation of the test substance was determined an the basis of the reduction of dissolved oxygen.

A degradation rate of 76% for sodium benzoate, the reference substance, was achieved within 14 days. Within the test period of 28 days, a degradation rate of 63% was determined for Methyl cinnamic aldehyde alpha. Methyl cinnamic aldehyde alpha is therefore classified as "Readily Biodegradable".
