Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
partition coefficient
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
comparable to guideline study
Justification for type of information:
Attempts made by comparing relative solubility in water and octanol
Normal mentods not possible due to presence of residual water and surface active properties
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 107 (Partition Coefficient (n-octanol / water), Shake Flask Method)
Version / remarks:
Shake flask proved impractical, so comparative solubilities assessed
Principles of method if other than guideline:
A quantity of the test substance, was placed in an oven at 110°C for 5-6 hours to drive off the water. The colour of the product remained the same and no indication of degradation of the product was evident. 4g of this ‘dehydrated’ material was then weighed into each of three glass vials equipped with screw caps. 5 g of n-octanol was added, and the vials were shaken gently. The vials were equilibrated for one week in an oven at approximately 35°C, with occasional agitation. Dissolution was apparent from the clear n-octanol layer in the vial. There was also a quantity of undissolved, solid material within the vial.

After one week of equilibration, the first vial was equilibrated at 25°C overnight and a sample was removed from the clear n-octanol layer. An oven dry-down method was used to determine the amount of dissolved substance in the sample.

The second and third sample were analysed in the same way on subsequent days.
GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:
estimation method (solubility ratio)
Partition coefficient type:
octanol-water
Specific details on test material used for the study:
INCI Name: Cocamidopropyl PG-Dimonium Chloride Phosphate.
Analytical method:
other: Gravimetric
Type:
log Pow
Partition coefficient:
< 0
Temp.:
25 °C
pH:
5.8
Details on results:
Solublity in water = 600 g/l
Solublity in octanol = 414 g/l
Solubility in water marginally higher than in octanol
Conclusions:
Substance is very soluble in water and octanol
Solubility in water marginally higher than in octanol
