Description of key information

The 2-[(2-nitrophenyl)amino]ethanol is considered to be inert in terms of oxidizing properties, according to the criteria as described in the EU Method A17.

The purpose of the study was to determine the oxidizing properties of the test item 2-[(2-nitrophenyl)amino]ethanol following the OECD guideline A.17 Oxidizing Properties (solids) and the GLP.

A preliminary test has been performed with the mixture dried test item / cellulose (2/1), formed into a small cone-shaped pile and ignited. The mixture burned evenly. As the result was open to doubt a full test was performed.

The main test was then conducted following the guideline. The test item-cellulose mixtures from 10% to 90% were tested to define the 3 mixtures with the fastest burning rate. Then the test was repeated 6 times with these 3 mixtures and compared with the mixtures barium nitrate-cellulose.

The maximum burning rate 1.69 mm/sec was obtained with the mixtures 40% and 50% of test item/cellulose. This is higher than the maximum burning rate of 0.58 mm/sec for the mixture barium nitrate/cellulose 50/50.  

To ensure that no false positive results were observed, the test was repeated using kieselguhr as inert substance in place of cellulose.The material may be considered not to possess oxidizing properties and thus the results from the A. 17 Test may be considered as a “false positive”, if the mixtures of the test substance with both cellulose and kieselguhr showed similar propagation rates. And it was observed that the two series of tests (with 50% and 60% test item) showed a similar pattern of change in the rate of propagation as the composition of the mixtures is altered. The test item is considered to be inert in terms of oxidizing properties, according to the criteria as described in the EU Method A17.

This oxidising properties test is classified as acceptable, and satisfies the guideline requirements.
