Description of key information

For skin irriation/corrosion an in vitro was carried out on a reconstructed human epidermis.
For eye irriation an in vitro study for assessing ocular irritation of compounds a human epithelial corneal cell model was used.
Additional in vivo assays for skin irritation/corrosion and for eye irritation from a secondary source were available.

Additional information

In the in vitro assays tetrachlorophthalic anhydride was not irritating. Also in the in vivo tests with not assignable reliability on the skin and eye of rabbits the test compound was not irritating.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Due to the results of the in-vitro and in-vivo studies on rabbits a classification for skin irritation/corrosion and eye irritation seems not justified.

However acccording to regulation (EC) no 1272/2008 tetrachlorophthalic anhydride is classified as Eye Dam. 1; H318 ( Causes serious eye damage).

This classification for tetrachlorophthalic anhydride was adopted for the eye irritation.
