Description of key information

Non explosive

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

No study on explosive properties of Disperse Red 050 was available. Therefore, avaliable data on a similar substance, i.e. Disperse Orange 073 (EC 255 -037 -7, CAS 40690 -89-9) was used.

These substances share the same molecular structure and mainly differ for one alkyl chain on the tertiary amine, i.e. an ethyl chain in Disperse Red 050 and an ethylbenzoate in Disperse Orange 073. No effect on explosive properties is expected from such differences.

The study was conducted according to EU method A.14.

The method comprises three parts:

a) test of thermal sensitivity:

b) test of mechanical sensitivity with respect to shock;

c) test of mechanical sensitivity with respect to friction

The substance was found to be non-explosive.

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to the definition set out in the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008), an explosive substance or mixture is a solid or liquid substance or mixture of substances which is in itself capable by chemical reaction of producing gas at such a temperature and pressure and at such a speed as to cause damage to the surroundings. Pyrotechnic substances are included even when they do not evolve gases.

Based on the available information, by following a read across approach, Disperse Red 050 was considered as non explosive.
