In general, all members of the alkyl sulfate category including Sulfuric acid, mono C12 -alkyl ester have been found to be readily biodegradable. Two studies conducted according to OECD 301B and 301D are available for Sulfuric acid, mono C12 -alkyl ester, sodium salts.

The fate of the test substance under aerobic and anaerobic conditions was tested in three studies performed according to OECD guideline 308 and 314(D) by Procter and Gamble (1993). It could be demonstrated, that the test substance is mineralised under aerobic and anaerobic conditions in water-sediment simulation tests to an extent exceeding 76%. In river water with and without sediment, the test substance was mineralised to a degree ranging from 87.3 to 93.1% (Marks, 1993). In an artificial water-sediment system degradation of the test substance was found as 76.9% after 92 days and 76.4% after 137 days in an anaerobic water-sediment test system.
