Description of key information

It is technically not feasible to conduct aquatic toxicology studies because phosgene hydrolyse rapidly (half - life = 0.026 seconds). Any effects resulting from the unlikely introduction of phosgene to surface waters will be attributed to the formation of hydrogen chloride (HCl) and an associated drop in pH. The acute ecological effects of HCl on fish, invertebrates and aquatic plants have been extensively studied. Therefore, the key value is based on information related to HCl.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
0.492 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
0.097 mg/L
