Additional information

Skin irritation

The skin irritancy potential of 2-chorophenol was determined in a skin irritation study in white rabbits (NZW) (reference 7.3.1-1). The test substance was topically applied to the skin of six rabbits for 4 and 24 h. Local reactions were scored at 4, 24, 48, 72 und 168 h. All animals showed signs of corrosion at all observation time points after application. In detail, topical application for 4 h resulted in severe erythema and edema. When the test substance was applied for 24 h, eschar formation was observed. Loosening about edges of scab after 17 - 21 days revealed injury in depth. Based on the results of the conducted study, 2-chlorophenol is considered as corrosive to the skin.

Eye irritation

To evaluate the irritation potential towards the eyes, 0.1 mL undiluted test substance was instilled into the eyes of six white rabbits (NZW) for 1 min and 24 h (reference 7.3.2-1). The reactions were observed 1, 24, 48, 72, 120 and 168 h after treatment. All animals showed signs of corrosion at all observation time points after application. Based on the results of the conducted study, 2-chlorophenol is considered as corrosive to the eyes.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The available data on skin and eye irritation meet the criteria for classification as Skin Corr. Cat. 1 (H314) and Eye Dam. Cat. 1 (H318) according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008.
