In a study which basically followed the methodology of a guideline closed bottle ready biodegradation study and used non adapted domestic sewage seed, 2 -butoxyethyl acetate was found to be readily biodegradable, with 53% degradation after 5 days and 72% after 20 days. In a biodegradation study according to OECD 301A, 2 -butoxyethyl acetate showed 97% degradation within 7 days; the substance is readily biodegradable according to this information. In a guideline respirometry biodegradation study for which only the results are available, degradation of 58% was achieved in 10 days with a final degradation of 88% in 28 days; the substance meets the criteria for ready biodegradability according to this result. In an inherent biodegradation study carried out according to guideline, 2 -butoxyethyl acetate reached a degradation exceeding 90% within 6.5 days. Degradation proceeded at about 12% per day. In summary, three ready biodegradation studies are available and all indicate that the substance is readily biodegradable.

In a guideline simulation test of an aerobic sewage treatment plant for which only the results are available, degradation of 96.7% was achieved following 3 hours retention in the simulation reactor. This would suggest that a higher factor than default can be used in predicting environmental emissions to water following processing in industrial or municipal WWTPs. Simulation studies are not normally required for substances that are readily biodegradable.
