Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

Naphthalene is considered to be easily biodegradable, as demonstrated by most of the great entirety of biodegradation studies under aerobic conditions, one standard MITI(I) screening test even indicating ready biodegradability. There is clear evidence of at least inherent biodegradability with no signs of persistence.

Based on experimental evidence, bioaccumulation of naphthalene is low with reliable BCF values in fish below 500.

Robust NOEC/EC10 values from aquatic long-term tests with naphthalene are greater than 0.1 mg/L, not any being equal or lower than the NOEC cut-off limit of 0.01 µg/L for the T-criterion.
