Materials and methods

Test guideline
Qualifier:
no guideline available
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Three groups of two male and two female Beagle dogs each were used in each experiment. The first group received the test material alone; the second group, chlorpromazine (CPZ) followed in 0.5 hour by the test material; and the third, an inert control in doses equal in volume to the test doses.
GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:

Constituent 1
Chemical structure
Reference substance name:
Pentasodium triphosphate
EC Number:
231-838-7
EC Name:
Pentasodium triphosphate
Cas Number:
7758-29-4
Molecular formula:
H5O10P3.5Na

Species:
dog
Strain:
Beagle
Sex:
male/female

Administration / exposure

Route of administration:
other: gastric intubation
Frequency of treatment:
Dogs were dosed no more frequently than once every 4 days. Except for the apomorphine experiment, dosing followed a three by three Latin square design; each group of dogs received all three treatments during each experiment.

Apomorphine experiments followed a simple cross-over technique using apomorphine alone or CPZ followed in 0.5 hour by apomorphine.
Control animals:
yes

Results and discussion

Details on results:
Of the materials tested in this report, the sodium silicate, STP (sodium tripolyphosphate) and TKPP (tetrapotassium pyrophosphate) were the most potent emetic materials. In addition, there was a more prompt onset of vomiting than with the remaining detergent product ingredients.

Experience in our toxicological evaluation program with soap and synthetic detergent formulations has shown the general purpose, built formulation to be more effective and prompt in inducing emesis than formulations which do not contain the inorganic phosphate builders.
