Short term toxicity

No reliable data is available assessing the toxicity of trisodium citrate to fish or algae, however, data for the parent compound, citric acid, is available.

The available read-across data from citric acid is sufficient to fulfil the information requirements for these endpoints. Information available in the public domain on tests carried out on other salts of this metal indicates that the potassium ions are not expected to contribute to the toxicity of the substance. Additionally, the substance will dissociate when in solution, so the test organisms will be exposed to the citrate and the metal ions separately. Therefore, the hazard assessment for this substance can be based on the properties of citric acid.

Reliable acute toxicity tests results are available for freshwater fish (Leuciscus idus) with citric acid, invertebrates (Daphnia magna) with trisodium citrate, and algae (Scenedesmus quadricauda) with citric acid. LC50 values for fish is 590 mg trisodium citrate/L, while the EC50 value for daphnia is 736 mg trisodium citrate/L. A TT of 640 mg/L was determined in the algal test from which a NOEC of 425 mg/L (citric acid) was derived. However the algal study should not be considered due to the essential nutrient complexing properties of the test substance that do not permit to assess the true toxicity of the test substance.

In accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VIII, the activated sludge respiration inhibition study (required in Section 9.1.4) does not need to be conducted as the substance is readily biodegradable and the applied test concentrations are in the range that can be expected in the influent to a sewage treatment plant.

Long term toxicity

In accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex IX, the long-term aquatic toxicity to fish study (required in Section 9.1.6) does not need to be conducted as the chemical safety assessment according to Annex I indicates that this is not necessary.

In accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex IX, the long-term aquatic toxicity to invertebrates study (required in Section 9.1.5) does not need to be conducted as the chemical safety assessment according to Annex I indicates that this is not necessary.
