Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Formic acid and the formate ion are readily biodegradable in marine water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Two tests on biodegradation in saltwater are available. The first test according to OECD guideline 306 uses non-specific marine microbiota as inoculum (Binnie Environmental Ltd. on behalf of Osca UK Ltd, 1994). After 28 days 92% of the analogous test substance potassium formate are degraded, related to the biological oxygen demand [BOD/ThOD]. In the second test Price et al. (1974) performed a non-guideline closed-bottle test. After 20 days of exposure, 95% of the test substance formic acid were degraded,

related to the biological oxygen demand [BOD/ThOD].
