In the atmosphere, DMSO concentrations are low and associated with aqueous phase. Reaction rate constants for the reaction of DMSO with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals is of 5.9*10-11 cm3/molecule-sec (eq. to a half-life of about 2.5 h) in the atmosphere and at an atmospheric concentration of 9.7*10+5 hydroxyl radicals per cm3. Therefore DMSO can be considered as not persistent in the atmosphere. This value is also supported by modeling which indicates half-life of ca. 2 h. In presence of other oxidising compounds (ozone, NO3 radical, Cl, etc) persistency in the atmosphere can vary with half-life up to > 78 days in presence of ozone. DMSO does not absorb light at wavelengths >290 nm and therefore is not expected to be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight.
