Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

No valid study on the octanol-water partitioning coefficient of chloroform was found. The available data, used in a weight-of-evidence approach, indicate that the Log Pow is 1.97.

Additional information

The octanol-water partitioning behaviour of chloroform was determined experimentally. The measurements of Hansch and Anderson (1967) with shaking-flask method and gas-liquid chromatography to determine the chloroform in the aqueous phase produced a value for the log P of 1.97. This value was based on five consecutive experiments. Methods for the indirect determination of the log P value and calculation methods based on quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs) produce log P values for chloroform ranging from 1.43 to 2.09. In conclusion, there is evidence that the log P value for chloroform is approximately 2, and it is suggested to use the experimental value of 1.97 (Hansch and Anderson 1967) for the log P of chloroform.
