Reliable short-term toxicity tests results are available for freshwater fish (Oncorhynchus mykiss), invertebrates (Daphnia magna) and algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) for the registered substance, trimethoxy(vinyl)silane (CAS 2768-02-7; EC No. 220-449-8). The relevant short-term values are:

 

Fish: LC50 (96 h): 137 mg/L expressed in terms of concentration of the hydrolysis product, vinylsilanetriol.

Daphnia: EC50 (48 h): 121 mg/L expressed in terms of concentration of the hydrolysis product, vinylsilanetriol.

Algae: EC50 (72 h): >64 mg/L; NOEC: =64 mg/L expressed in terms of concentration of the hydrolysis product, vinylsilanetriol.

 

Long-term data are available with invertebrates (Daphnia magna):

21-day NOEC: 20 mg/L expressed in terms of concentration of the hydrolysis product, vinylsilanetriol.

 

The very rapid hydrolysis of trimethoxy(vinyl)silane (CAS 2768-02-7) (half-life 0.1 h at pH 7 and 20-25°C) means it is likely that the test organisms in each test were exposed primarily to the hydrolysis products, vinylsilanetriol (CAS 143-48-6) and methanol (CAS 67-56-1; EC No. 200-659-6).

 

There are no reliable microorganism toxicity data available for trimethoxy(vinyl)silane (CAS 2768-02-7), therefore good quality data for the structurally-related substance, trichloro(vinyl)silane (CAS 75-94-5; EC No. 200-917-8)), have been read across. Both substances share the same silanol hydrolysis product, vinylsilanetriol. The other hydrolysis products are methanol and hydrogen chloride / chloride salts (CAS 7647-01-0; EC No. 231-595-7) respectively.
