First-aid measures

Inhalation

Move to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.  Call a physician or Poison Control Centre immediately.  Do not use mouth-to-mouth if victim inhaled the substance.  Induce artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device.

Skin contact

Immediately take off all contaminated clothing.  Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes.  Immediately flush skin with plenty of water.    Call a physician or Poison Control Centre immediately.

Ingestion

If swallowed, do NOT induce vomiting.  Do not induce vomiting without medical advice.  If vomiting occurs naturally, have victim lean forward to         reduce risk of aspiration.  Have victim rinse mouth thoroughly with water.  Never give anything by mouth to a victim who is unconscious or is having convulsions.  Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested the substance.  Get medical attention immediately.

General advice

Immediate medical attention is required.

Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved, and take preacutions to protect themselves.

Show this safety data sheet to the doctor in attendance.

Notes to physician

Treat as cyanide poisoning.  Symptoms may be delayed.

Fire-fighting measures

Hazardous combustion products

Combustion products include fumes, smoke, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.   May include oxides of nitrogen.  Traces of hydrogen cyanide  may be found in fire conditions.

Suitable extinguishing media

Carbon dioxide (CO2).  Water.  Water spray.  Dry chemical.  Foam.

Extinguishing media which must not be used for safety reasons

Do not use a solid stream as it may scatter and spread fire.

Protection of firefighters

Firefighters should wear full protective clothing including self contained breathing apparatus.

Specific methods

In the event of fire, cool tanks with water spray.  Use water spray to cool unopened containers.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions

Wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

Keep unnecessary personnel away.

Environmental precautions

Do not let product enter drains.  Do not flush into surface water.

Methods for cleaning up

Large Spills: Dike far ahead of liquid spill for later disposal.  Use a non-combustible material like vermiculite, sand or earth to soak up the product and place into a container for later disposal.

Small Spills: Wipe up with absorbent material (e.g. cloth, fleece).  Clean contaminated surface thoroughly.

Never return spills to original container for re-use.

Other information

Clean up in accordance with all applicable regulations.

Handling and storage

Handling

Follow all SDS/label precautions even after container is emptied because they may retain product residues.  Do not breathe                                             gas/fumes/vapour/spray.  Do not get this material in contact with skin or eyes.  Use this product with adequate ventilation.

Storage

Keep this material away from food, drink and animal feed.  Store away from strong oxidizers.  Keep tightly closed in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place.  Keep away from heat, sparks, and flame.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Engineering measures

Ensure adequate ventilation, especially in confined areas.

Personal protective equipment

 Respiratory protection

When workers are facing concentrations above the exposure limit they must use appropriate certified respirators.  Respirator with combination           filter for vapour/ particulate (EN 141).

 Hand protection

   Solvent-resistant gloves (butyl rubber).

   Permeation rate: >480 min

   Thickness: 0.5 mm

   Avoid nitrile rubber gloves.

 Eye protection

Wear chemical goggles and face shield.

 Skin and body protection

Wear appropriate chemical resistant gloves.  Use of an impervious apron is recommended.  Use of impervious boots is recommended.

 General

Always have on hand a cyanide first-aid kit, together with proper instructions.

Keep working clothes separately.  Use personal protective equipment as required.  Use of protective coveralls and long sleeves is recommended.

Stability and reactivity

Stability

Stable at normal conditions.

Conditions to avoid

Heat, flames and sparks.

Hazardous decomposition products

Hydrogen cyanide (hydrocyanic acid).  Irritating and/or toxic fumes and gases may be emitted upon the products decomposition.  At thermal            decompostion temperatures, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.

Materials to avoid

Avoid: strong oxidizing agents, strong acids and strong bases, reducing agents.

Disposal considerations

Disposal instructions

Dispose in accordance with all applicable regulations.

Waste from residues / unused products

Dispose of in accordance with local regulations.

Contaminated packaging

Do not re-use empty containers.  Can be offered for recycling, re-conditioning or puncture.
