Applicant's summary and conclusion

Interpretation of results:
other: not highly flammable solid substance
Conclusions:
3-Hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid was tested for flammability in a preliminary test equivalent to VDI 2263.

Based on the reactions to ignition with a flame or with a hot platinum wire seen in the present study, combustion number 2 (Brennzahl 2, brief burning and rapid extinction) was assigned to the test substance. According to EU classification rules the substance does not need to be classified as “Highly flammable” solid substance (DIRECTIVE 2001/59/EC).
Executive summary:

3-Hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid was tested for flammability in a preliminary test equivalent to VDI 2263.

At room temperature, test substance powder was placed on a ceramic plate and ignited with a flame and hot platinum wire. The reaction to each kind of ignition was visually evaluated using combustion scale ("Brennzahl") 1 to 6 defined in test guideline VDI 2263.

Upon ignition with the flame, smoke was generated to a slight degree. Ignition with the hot platinum wire induced brief flaring up. Upon removal of the platinum wire the flame went out. Independent flame extension or propagate combustion were not evident. Therefore, the determination of burning time was unnecessary. In addition, melting of the test substance was seen.

Based on the reactions to ignition seen in this study combustion number 2 (Brennzahl 2, brief burning and rapid extinction) was assigned to the test substance. According to EU classification rules the substance does not need to be classified as “Highly flammable” solid substance (DIRECTIVE 2001/59/EC).
