Details on inhalation exposure:
GENERATION OF TEST ATMOSPHERE / CHAMBER DESCRIPTION
- Exposure apparatus: inhalation chamber obtained from a commercial supplier (Young and Bertke Co., Cincinnati, OH) and is similar to the EPA design described by Hinners and coworkers. The chamber is constructed of stainless steel and glass.
- Exposure chamber volume: 447 liters
- Method of holding animals in test chamber: individualy caged in a compartmented stainless steel wire cage (5" x 8" x 7")
- Source and rate of air: conditioned room aire passed through an absolute filter
- System of generating particulates/aerosols: Solosphere nebulizer (Miller, et al., 1981)
- Method of particle size determination: by a low volume cascade impactor (Aries, Inc., Davis, CA)
- Treatment of exhaust air: passed through an absolute filter to remove particulate contaminants, and through an activated charcoal element to remove vapor contaminants, then further purified by the building exhaust system before release.

TEST ATMOSPHERE
- Samples taken from breathing zone: yes

TEST ATMOSPHERE (if not tabulated)
- MMAD (Mass median aerodynamic diameter) / GSD (Geometric st. dev.): MMAD of 4.40µm with GSD of 1.18
Analytical verification of test atmosphere concentrations:
yes
Duration of exposure:
1 h
Concentrations:
The mean total chamber air concentration of BSC was 1.87 mg/l with a standard deviation of +- 0.10. The calculated nominal concentration was 6.85 mg/l.
No. of animals per sex per dose:
5 male and 5 female
Control animals:
yes
Details on study design:
- Duration of observation period following administration: 14 days
- Frequency of observations and weighing: Rats were observed frequently during exposure. After exposure, the rats will be observed twice a day and all clinical signs and mortalities will be recorded.
- Necropsy of survivors performed: yes
- Other examinations performed: clinical signs, body weight: body weights will be recorded on day 0, 7 and 14.
Statistics:
Body weights wil be compared to their day 0 weights to check for significant weight gain or depression using Student's paired T-test

Results and discussion

Mortality:
A one-hour inhalation exposure of rats to 1.87 mg/l BSC caused 9 death (90%)
Clinical signs:
other: Reduced activity, wet muzzles, dyspnea/wheezing, dacryorrhea, chromodacryorrhea, chromorhinorrhea, brown flacks on chin and face, wet pelvic/ventral areas and some hair loss.
Other findings:
Necropsy findings suggest death was due to pulmonary insufficiency evidenced by pulmonary congestion.
