Description of key information

Possible estrogenicity and anti-androgenicity effects of benzophenone

Additional information

Benzophenone has been tested in a variety of in vitro and in vivo studies focussed on possible endocrine effects. From the results of these studies it can be concluded that benzophenone itself has no significant endocrine disrupting potential, however one of the metabolites (i.e. p-hydroxybenzophenone) is known to cause such effects. In most of the uterotrophic assays as well as in a Hershberger assay negative results were obtained. Only at higher dose levels (>= 300 mg/kg bw/d) in some studies a positive reaction in the uterotrophic assay was seen. However, compared with the derived DNELs and the assumed uptake in humans, there is a very high margin of safety.
