Description of key information

The key study is the study of Clarke (2000), performed according to OECD guideline 301D (closed bottle test), and assigned a Klimisch 1 reliability score. This study demonstrates 100% degradation after 28 days, satisfying the 10-d time window. Zirconium acetate can therefore be considered as readily biodegradable, fulfilling the 10-d time window criterium. It must however be noted that this result is applicable to the acetate part of the molecule, as the inorganic part is inherently not biodegradable.

There is one study available screening the biodegradability of zirconium acetate (Clarke, 2000). This study can be considered as key study and is assigned a Klimisch 1 reliability score. In this study, a closed bottle test was performed according to OECD guideline 301D, demonstrating that zirconium acetate is readily biodegradable. 100% degradation was observed after 28 days, satisfying the 10-d time window (i.e., the substance is readily biodegradable, fulfilling the 10-d time window criterium). It must be kept in mind that this refers to the organic part of the molecule (acetate), since zirconium itself is not biodegradable. For the inorganic part of the molecule biodegradation testing or evaluation is not relevant.
