The study by Gancet (2010) is a ready biodegradability closed bottle test on dimethyl sulphide following OECD guideline 301D. The study meets the validity criteria and is considered reliable and suitable for use for this endpoint. The study indicates that dimethyl sulphide is readily biodegradable, with 77% biodegradation of the ThOD in 28 days. Dimethyl sulphide is not inhibitory to micro-organisms.

The results are supported by Thiebaud (1994), which is a ready biodegradation test, performed with dimethyl sulfide according to the OECD testing guideline 301D (closed-bottle test). 67.4% degradation was observed after 28 days and the 10-day window criteria was fulfilled. Concurrent inhibition and reference flasks were also tested. According to these results, dimethyl sulfide can be considered as readily biodegradable.

This is supported by a QSAR, which is considered an appropriate technique to predict ready biodegradability and is suitable as a supporting study.
