Various screening studies have shown that biodegradation of DTPA occurs very slowly under typical environmental conditions. Thus, little useful information would be gained from a simulation study in water and sediment. Photodegradation of DTPA, particularly the iron (Fe+3) chelate, is expected to be a major degradation route in the aqueous environment. Photodegradation studies have identified the following photodegradation products for DTPA: Diethylenetriaminetetraacetic acid, diethylenetriaminetriacetic acid, ethylenediaminetriacetic acid, N,N'- and/or N,N-ethylenediaminediacetic acid, iminodiacetate, ethylenediaminemonoacetic acid and glycine.
