A single study (Geiger 1985) is available for the endpoint of short-term toxicity to fish. This reports that the 96hr LC50 of Diisobutyl phthalate to Fathead minnows (freshwater fish) was determined to be 0.90 mg/L. These data are adequate to fulfil this endpoint.

There are no experimental studies available for the long-term toxicity to fish endpoint for diisobutyl phthalate, however there is a study available on the close structural analogue dibutyl phthalate which provide a suitable read across. Rhodes (1995) reports a 99 -day flow through test with Onconrhychus mykiss. The most sensitive endpoint measured is growth, for which the NOEC is 0.10 mg dibutyl phthalate/L.


A single study (Linden 1979) is available for the short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates endpoint. It reports that the 96 h LC50 of diisobutyl phthalate to Nitocra spinipes is 3.0 mg/l. This result is adequate to fulfil this endpoint.

There are no available data for the corresponding long term toxicity. This endpoint has been waived.


A single study for this endpoint (Harlan 2010) is available. This reports a 72 hr EC50 of diisobutyl phthalate to the green alga Desmodesmus subspicatus, based on growth rate, of 1.7 mg/L. The corresponding NOEC is 0.35 mg/L.


In the toxicity control of a guideline biodegradation study with activated domestic sludge (Clarke, 2010) the 14 day biodegradation of sodium benzoate exposed together with the test item was 55%. ≥ 25 % degradation is considered to be an indication of a non-inhibitory substance according to OECD 301 guideline. Thus the test item concentration of 14.5 mg/L, is considered to be an applicable NOEC.
