Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

In aquatic systems, valeryl chloride (CAS 638-29-9) hydrolyses quickly and forms HCl (CAS 7647-01-0) and valeric acid (CAS 109-52-4) (for details see section 5.1.2).

Short-term toxicity to fish:

Parent compound valeryl chloride: With high probability acutely not harmful to fish after pH-adjustment (96-h LC50 = 68.1 mg/L, not pH-adjusted; LC50 > 100 mg/L, pH-adjusted).

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:

Parent compound: No data available.

Hydrolysis product valeric acid: Acutely harmful to aquatic invertebrates (48-h LC50 = 45 mg/L).

Hydrolysis product HCl: Acutely very toxic for aquatic invertebrates (pH dependent; 48-h EC50 = 0.492 mg/L). These data have not been taken into consideration to evaluate aquatic toxicity as observed effects are caused by a pH-shift in the test medium.

Growth inhibition to aquatic algae:

Parent compound: No data available.

Hydrolysis product: Acutely harmful to aquatic algae (72 -h EC50 = 31.3 mg/L).

Hydrolysis product HCl: Acutely very toxic for aquatic organisms (pH dependent; 72-h ErC50 = 0.492 mg/L). These data have not been taken into consideration to evaluate aquatic toxicity as observed effects are caused by a pH-shift in the test medium.

Toxicity to microorganisms:

Parent compound: No data available.

Hydrolysis product valeric acid: The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriately low concentrations (40-h EC50 = 189 mg/L).

Hydrolysis product HCl: No data available.
