Description of key information

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
640 mg/L

Additional information

To describe the aquatic toxicity to microorganisms studies with the two main components of the UVCB (EDTA metal complexes with iron and manganese) are available.

The toxicity of the two EDTA metal salts (MnEDTANa2, CAS 15375-84-5; FeEDTANa, CAS 15708-41-5) were investigated in activated sludge respiration inhibition tests, conducted according to OECD guideline 209 under GLP conditions [Akzo Nobel, 2010]. After a contact duration of 3 hours, no inhibition of the respiration of the activated sludge was measured at the highest test concentration of 640 mg/L.
