Description of key information

Measured values for the bioconcentration factor are available for SAS-296. 1,4-Dimethyl-2-(1-phenylethyl)benzene (SAS-296) was tested in a flow-through system in accordance with OECD Test Guideline 305 for 42 days with two concentration levels (1 ppb and 0.1 ppb). A stock solution used in the test was prepared without dispersant but direct dissolution in the test water. BCF values at steady state were determined as 540 for the higher and 620 for the lower concentration level.
The bioconcentration factor (BCF) of members of the diphenylmethan category was also calculated by the EPI (Estimation Programs Interface) Suite™, a Windows®-based suite of physical/chemical property and environmental fate estimation programs developed by the EPA’s Office of Pollution Prevention Toxics and Syracuse Research Corporation (SRC).
Following results for the bioconcentration factor BCF (L/kg wet weight; upper, mid and lower trophic level) were obtained:
1,1-DPE: 325 - 420
Benzyltoluene: 725 - 1048
Phenyl-tolyl-ethane: 1253- 1732
SAS-296: 855 - 1345
SAS-305: 2322 - 2596

Additional information

In addition, data is available from a reliable QSAR model.

Bioaccumulation of 1,1’-DPE is not expected since the criterion for considering substances as being not bioaccumulative (i.e. unlikely to have a BCF > 2,000) are met as can be derived from BCF calculation: The BCF of 325 to 420 for 1,1’-DPE fits well within the lower range of calculated values for BCF. As can be expected a clear correlation exists between molecular weight and the BCF. No further testing is required.
