Acutely harmful to aquatic organisms. The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

This assessment was based on the following data:

The EC50 value of the test substance on Daphnia magna was determined to be 65.7 mg/L in a GLP guideline study according to OECD 202 (BASF SE 50E0542/11E054.2012). Based on these data, the test substance is considered to be acutely harmful to aquatic invertebrates.

The acute toxicity of the test substance on Desmodesmus subspicatus was measured in a GLP guideline study according to OECD 201. The NOEC on the growth rate was determined to be about 13.7 mg/L and the EC50 value was found to be 40.6 mg/L (BASF SE 60E0542/11E115, 2012). Therefore, the test substance is considered to be acutely harmful to aquatic algae.

The toxicity to microorganisms was tested in a GLP approach according to OECD guideline 209 using domestic non-adapted activated sludge as inoculum (BASF 08G0542/11G110, 2011). After an incubation period of 180 minutes the EC10 was found to be 62 mg/L while the EC50 was estimated to be 440 mg/L, both related to the nominal concentrations.
