Description of key information

The following was provided as the key study to assess the toxicity of dibutyltin maleate to microorganisms:
Clarke, N (2010) CAS No 78-04-6: Assessment of the Inhibitory Effect on the Respiration of Activated Sewage Sludge. Testing laboratory: Harlan Laboratories Limited, Shardlow Business Park, Shardlow, Derbyshire, DE72 2GD, UK. Owner company: Organo Tin REACH Consortium, c/o ReachCentrum, Avenue E. Van Nieuwenhuyse 6, B-1160, Brussels, BELGIUM. Report No.: 3109/0053. Report date: 2010-06-30
The study was performed to assess the effect of the test item on the respiration of activated sewage sludge. The method followed was that described in the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals (1984) No 209 "Activated Sludge, Respiration Inhibition Test", Method C.11 of Commission Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008 and US EPA Draft Ecological Effects Test Guidelines OPPTS 850.6800.
The effect of the test item on the respiration of activated sewage sludge gave a 3-Hour EC50 of 1010 mg/l (* Value obtained by calculation using the Xlfit3 software), 95% confidence limits 830 - 1230 mg/I. The No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) after 3 hours exposure was 150 mg/l.
The reference item gave a 3-Hour EC50 value of 7.1 mg/l, 95% confidence limits 5.4 - 9.4 mg/l.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
1 010 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
150 mg/L

Additional information

A reliability rating of 1 was assigned to the key study Clarke N (2010), according to the criteria of Klimisch, 1997 as the study was conducted in accordance with a recognised guideline and GLP. The EC50 of activated sludge exposed to dibutyltin maleate was determined to be 1010 mg/L, the NOEC was determined to be 150 mg/L.
